Hiking for a Better Future: Our Fair Travel Day at the Gföhlberghütte

“Hiking for a Better Future” was the theme of the mountain hut event organized by Naturfreunde Internationale and Naturfreunde Eichgraben on June 21. In the midst of hot summer weather, the group set out together for the Gföhlberghütte in the Lower Austrian part of the Vienna Woods. The hike focused on discussions about the effects of climate change—which is also leaving its mark along the trail—climate justice, and the impact of our own behavior on the future of our planet.

At the Gföhlberghütte, hikers were treated not only to refreshments featuring regional mountain delicacies but also to a varied program for all ages. The event included discussions on fair travel, tips for nature-friendly recreation, and many ideas on how small changes in daily life can contribute to a good life for everyone. By the end of the day, it was clear to the participants that a sustainable lifestyle isn’t about sacrifice, but about gain: about respectful coexistence, mindful enjoyment, and being present and mindful while exploring nature—whether in the local area or at distant travel destinations.

Feedback from the hikers also showed that this concept was a success. One participant described the hut event day as “one of the best events” she had ever attended, and particularly highlighted the many new insights on the topic of sustainability as well as the opportunity to get to know “a group of very dedicated and open-minded people.” She was especially pleased with the new connections she made during the event. Another participant raved about the “super exciting event with such lovely people” and the practical tips for sustainable travel that she could use in her daily life.

The rustic Gföhlberghütte is also one of four Nature Friends huts where the Nature Friends Hut Challenge kicked off on World Environment Day, June 5, offering hikers vegetarian or vegan climate-friendly treats as well as postcards with recipes to try at home. Guests can access a contest via a QR code. The grand prize is a 150-euro gift certificate that can be redeemed at any of 130 Nature Friends huts throughout Austria. Anyone who wants to enter the contest, even without going on a hike, and learn more about the SDGs can participate online!
