Since 2012, Naturefriends Austria have been striving to have selected Naturefriends houses and mountain huts certified according to the Austrian Ecolabel. To date, six Naturefriends houses have been certified, two more have applied. One of the mountain huts that have already been certified is Gföhlberghütte, located in the Vienna Woods, west of Vienna, at 825 m above sea level. The foundation and basement are made from local sandstone, the hut itself is made from local wood. The walls are made from larch wood. The hut is equipped with a photovoltaic system and a wind power station, as well as a solar system for water heating. Only self-lumbered wood is used for heating, and the toilet facilities are dry composting toilets which decompose all human and kitchen waste without the need of a treatment plant, water, or chemicals. Within two years, this produces high-quality humus.

All this even led to the Gföhlberghütte winning the Naturefriends International climate championship in the category “construction and operations” in 2008!
