TRAILS Path Maintenance Naßwald Project

On 10 May, the Naturfreundejugend organised a pilot project in Naßwald, where interested young people had the opportunity to learn about trail maintenance.

Together with an experienced trail maintainer, two trails around Naßwald were re-marked. The group of about 10 people was divided into two teams, which then set off on their own. The participants had a lot of fun putting themselves in the shoes of hikers and thinking about where the next marker would be best placed. ‘It's great fun to see the trail in a completely different way. What is it like for other people when they walk the trail? Where do the markers need to be so that they know where to go next? I enjoyed seeing the work that goes into it. I wasn't aware before that this also has to be done, of course,’ reported Lisa, a participant in the project.

The project to renew the trail markings sparked lively discussions about the importance of trail maintenance, and some of the participants expressed enthusiasm about getting involved again in the future. ‘I was surprised that all this trail maintenance is done by volunteers!’ said Felix, another enthusiastic participant.

After a few hours of work, the day was rounded off with a meal together in the afternoon. The discussion continued about the importance of community action for society. ‘A society only works if you are willing to do something for society yourself and not just take,’ summarised volunteer Richard aptly. All in all, it was a successful and educational outing!
