In Togo, as in other West African countries, forest damage and deforestation are increasing alarmingly. One of the reasons is the increasing demand for firewood due to the population growth, especially in rural areas. Wood and charcoal are the most important energy sources for cooking in Togo.

Naturefriends Bremen and Naturefriends Togo (CASE Togo Amis de la Nature) conducted a campaign in which energy-efficient cookers were provided - initially for a few selected families. Although the stoves are also powered by charcoal, consumption is 30 % lower than with traditional stoves due to the special design. These stoves are produced in a metal workshop in the town of Kpalimé using materials available in the region. Needing less charcoal also leads to a reduction of the household budgets of the families.

With donations from Naturefriends from all over Germany and business enterprises, the project was extended to a large number of other Togolese households.
