A fruit trees nursery for Farako (Mali) – Production, distribution, and planting of fruit trees for a better future

We are delighted to announce a new Climate Fund project to combat poverty and hunger while mitigating the impact of climate change. It will be implemented by our partner organisation (C-member) 2ADIB-MALI Amis de la Nature, which has been implementing projects that fight poverty and malnutrition and ensure environmental sustainability and education in Mali for almost 20 years.

The project region is located around Farako in southern Mali, where successive droughts, the pandemic and the security crisis have dramatically worsened the living conditions of the population and led to an increase in extreme poverty and malnutrition. As a result, there is currently a massive exodus of young people, exacerbating the situation.

The aim of the project is to establish a commercial nursery to produce fruit tree seedlings. Within one year, 1,000 fruit trees such as mango, lemon, guava, mandarin, and papaya will be produced and planted to meet the nutritional needs of the population, combat soil erosion and fight climate change.

What is needed?

  • Securing an area of 50 m /50 m with a wire fence to establish the nursery.
  • Construction of two improved wells to facilitate irrigation.
  • Build a straw shed to protect the young plants.
  • Training of farmers on tree production and maintenance techniques.
  • Purchase of production kits for tree seedlings.

The seeds and kits will be purchased from local markets. 2ADIB-MALI Amis de la Nature will also ensure the routine maintenance of the infrastructure and equipment, production, and distribution of trees.

What will be achieved?

The project is associated with numerous socio-economic benefits, such as improving the nutritional situation, creating sustainable livelihoods for families, and strengthening the local economy.
Equally important are the ecological impacts: The fruit trees will improve and stabilise the soil, support the water cycle and gradually restore vital ecosystem services. This will also significantly reduce the impact of climate change.

Project budget: 6,030 Euros

For a successful implementation, 4,180 Euros are still needed!
