Good Practice: De Kleine Rug (Netherlands)

The Dutch Naturefriends House De Kleine Rug (The Little Ridge) is located near the historic town of Dordrecht. It has 33 beds, a campsite, 4 small camping cabins and 2 log cabins.

Electric raft instead of diesel motorboat

De Kleine Rug is situated on a peninsula. The house can only be reached by boat and an electric raft picks you up when you call. With financial support from a company, the Friends of Nature have replaced the old motorboat and found a sustainable solution: an electric raft. The steering still takes some getting used to for the skippers, but guests and nature are delighted with this environmentally friendly solution.

Camping Pods

The purchase of the camping pods was made possible by the sale of another Friends of Nature house. Part of the proceeds went towards the purchase of the camping pods. The pods are very popular with guests and are almost always fully booked. They generate additional income without any investment costs, which can be used to invest more in maintenance and sustainability for the main houses. Win-win!

Self-catering kitchen

The house is managed on a voluntary basis, like all Naturefriends houses in the Netherlands. There is also a self-catering kitchen where visitors can cook.
