This campaign was launched by Naturefriends International in 2002 and puts the European network of protected areas, Natura 2000, at the heart of manifold activities aiming to raise the population’s awareness about the significance of local animals, plants and habitats.

International seminars in different countries were held during which stakeholders from the Naturefriends network were introduced to the importance of the Natura 2000 areas. Specific project ideas were developed in workshops.

Natura Trails became the pilot project of the campaign: Themed trails leading through Natura 2000 areas inform about the characteristic flora and fauna and encourage people to behave responsibly outdoors. Unlike traditional nature trails, it was a deliberate decision not to erect signposts. The characteristics of the respective area are described in handy folders that arouse interest and curiosity among the visitors.
