AKADGYM Salzburg water project

Around World Water Day on 22 March, Class 1h focused intensively on the precious resource of water.

Water is essential for life, yet we often take it for granted. To question this very notion, Class 1h embarked on an exciting learning journey on the topic of water around World Water Day on 22 March. The interdisciplinary project was made possible thanks to the support of Naturefriends International, Welthaus and the SDG ambassadors.

To kick things off, the students explored their own ideas and thoughts on the topic of water. A digital survey provided some initial food for thought and helped to consolidate their prior knowledge. This was followed by a particularly impressive experiment using a simple measuring cup to demonstrate how tiny the proportion of usable fresh water on Earth actually is. This revelation left many of the students amazed.

The issue of virtual water consumption was also addressed: how much water is contained in everyday consumer goods, from food to clothing? Clear comparisons showed how many ‘bathtubs full of water’ we indirectly consume every day. A personal water consumption diary helped the young people to document and question their own water usage, both on World Water Day and at the end of the school year.

In addition to scientific aspects, the cultural and symbolic significance of water was also a central focus. Using materials provided by the organisation Südwind, the class immersed themselves in religious and cultural perspectives and discovered the role water plays around the world. The project was rounded off with a trip to the ‘WasserSpiegel’ exhibition, combined with a hike up the Mönchsberg. A highlight for many!

Water was suddenly everywhere in the school building too: information posters in the toilets showed the average water footprint in Austria, for example, and encouraged people to think about their own consumption.

The day ended with everyone reflecting on the project over ice cream. A look at their water diaries showed that small changes in everyday life can make a big difference. The aim of the project was to raise awareness of this fact. It was a success. Those who value water also learn to use it responsibly.
